About the Owner/Chef
Chef Merissa Millan hails from Puerto Rican descent and was raised in East Harlem, NYC, a community rich with Latin culture, history and cuisine. Watching her grandmother prepare Latin cuisine from scratch, sparked her interest for the culinary world at a young age. Her early life experiences in East Harlem, then later in the Bronx, enabled Chef Millan to experience a rich array of food from various cultures, such as food from the “cuchifritos” on 116th street, then food from other Caribbean islands, Italian, and Irish communities in the Bronx. After changing her lifestyle to become healthier and lose weight, learning to make healthier versions of the food she loved, Chef Millan knew it was a culinary business she was destined for, and began her journey as a professional chef in 2016.
Chef Millan took her culinary skills to the next level when she enrolled in a Culinary Arts program held by Hostos Community College. Trained under NY’s best chefs, she learned pie making, developed knife skills, the art of sushi, as well as beautiful plating techniques. Prior to completing her culinary training Chef Millan was recruited by one of her instructors to work an externship at a restaurant/lounge. It was there that Chef Millan learned the environment of working in a professional kitchen. Chef Millan later worked in other restaurants and obtained a position as Executive Chef.
Shortly after, Chef Millan obtained her nutritionist certification. It wasn’t long before Chef Millan knew she was ready to start her own food business that recreated healthier versions of culture-rich comfort foods. Applying what she has learned to her own lifestyle through nutrition and exercise, Chef Millan successfully lost over 100 pounds. Chef Millan was able to lower her blood pressure and cholesterol and avoid health issues such as diabetes. Chef Millan continues to self-educate on nutrition and healthy living with the goal of assisting and educating others on the importance of living a healthier lifestyle.
